From Our Family to Yours
They were there for your first breath. They were there when you walked out the door to kindergarten, had your thirteenth birthday, and when you (sort of) learned to drive. They were there when you fell; and they were there to help pick you back up. So why shouldn’t they be there now? Your parents are often your most solid cornerstones, and Alpha Phi applauds them! That’s why UCI A Phi’s operates several programming opportunities for parents to experience Alpha Phi, and the next chapter in our members’ lives.
Alpha Phi keeps parents informed of goings-on through our e-newsletter, The Eta Kappa Quarterly, which is emailed over the Parent Listserve on a quarterly basis. This newsletter provides calendars of upcoming events, announcements of member accolades, academic standing of the chapter, and other news that parents often have a vested interest in. Parents can also communicate with the chapter’s Director of Parent Relations and Vice President of Marketing through this listserve should they have any questions or concerns about Alpha Phi. To further familiarize parents with Alpha Phi, UCI A Phi’s also hosts a number of annual events that establish positive relationships between parents and our chapter.
Presents offers parents a first glimpse into Alpha Phi life, as we present our new members, and invite parents and alumnae over to the Alpha Phi house for tea, treats, house tours, and mingling. Inspiration Week events involve parents on a more personalized level, as they guide their daughters through joining Alpha Phi in their own unique way. Parent’s Day Brunch is always memorable, whether parents dance with joy over winning raffle baskets, or hold back tears while their daughters read them moving letters of appreciation. Father-Daughter Mini Golf Tournament (a new tradition!) gives Dads an outlet to connect with the typically female cast of sororities, as dad-and-daughter teams duke it out for trophies, while Senior Tea gives Alpha Phi moms a chance to share in the excitement of their daughter’s graduation. Alpha Phi “Care Bear” Packages have also proven to be a sensational hit – as parents can order a finals care package every quarter for their studious Phi, chock-full of cookies, tea, protein bars, and chips – and still support the Alpha Phi Foundation, as 10% is donated to our charity. Furthermore, at the end of every year, parents are given a survey to reflect their satisfaction with Alpha Phi, which the VP Marketing and Director of Parent Relations analyze and take into consideration when planning the upcoming year.
We encourage our members to feel that they can include their parents in their Alpha Phi experience, and in doing so, parents walk away from their daughters’ years in Alpha Phi feeling confident that they have devoted themselves to a truly worthwhile sisterhood, not the off-putting stereotypes featured on TV shows and movies. So go ahead and open your doors, because we’ve opened ours!
